Regional Safety Specialist

Job Summary

Executes, at the branch level, the Border States employee-owner and fleet safety programs effectively.  Performs at an expert level in the core elements of the Border States safety program, to include branch assessments, regulatory inspections (fire extinguisher, forklift, etc.), fleet maintenance, safety inspections, and training.  Monitors branch performance on key safety metrics and assists in staying current on regular safety activities.  Collaborates with the safety department, regional operations leadership, and the area director to ensure branch safety expectations are achieved. 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Develops and maintains an understanding of Border States safety programs, basic safety practices, and any customer-specific safety requirements.
  • Travels to each branch regularly to conduct planned schedule of employee-owner and fleet safety inspections.
  • Functions as the first point of contact for significant safety incidents to provide in-person guidance to the branch personnel and provide updates to leadership.
  • Plans and coordinates programs and processes to reduce and eliminate injuries and environmental damage in the workplace.
  • Influences branch leadership to better understand and practice safety routines and processes.
  • Recognizes, assesses, and controls safety and health hazards in the facility, and works with internal departments to minimize occupational health and safety risks and manage compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Conducts comprehensive safety assessments and provides corrective actions.
  • Ensures the branch is compliant with all current safety regulations.
  • Conducts fleet maintenance spot inspections and works with the branch to facilitate correction of identified vehicle defects and follows up to ensure compliance.
  • Facilitates necessary basic safety training (new employee safety orientation, WorkPartners, forklift training, drivecam coaching, etc.)

Non-essential Functions

  • Acts as site safety liaison during large project efforts (warehouse reorganization, branch move, etc.)
  • Coordinates with safety personnel to provide additional field-level feedback on policy/program documents, Job Safety Analyses, etc.
  • Performs other safety functions on as-needed basis directed by the area director, regional operations leadership, or the safety department.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a 4-year degree in relevant area or two-year business/trade degree and at least 2 years work experience.
  • Minimum of 3-years of prior safety experience preferred. 
  • One year minimum experience in safety training development and delivery preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of safety, OSHA general industry and construction regulations.
  • Experience with contractor safety management services, such as ISNetworld, Browz, PICS, etc. preferred.
  • Safety certifications (i.e. CSP, GSP, etc.) preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English. 
  • Strong working knowledge of PC for Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet, Microsoft Outlook and SAP software preferred.
